Done!

Finished up the top of the multi hat. This picture shows the colors a bit better – think Crayola with a bit of black thrown in ;-)

Almost finished

This one I tried to make extra warm and thick – it’s made out of two strands of good ol Red Heart yarn out of a basic pattern I got from The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns. This is a GREAT book – it has standard patterns for all gauges of yarn in all sizes. I wouldn’t be without it.

Finished hat

I made this from the top down out of Bernat CottonTots yarn – it’s really soft and fluffy and warm. I started making an Icord, then increased at regular intervals until it was wide enough and finished with a roll brim – a bit tricky at the very beginning, but it means I can skip guage and make hats as big or as small as I want them to be.

Kathy's Introduction

I live in Southern California with my husband of seven years, Dan, and two sons, almost 4 and 6. We’re right in between Los Angeles and Disneyland in a small (for CA) city that no one has ever heard of. Currently I stay at home with the boys and take care of our home. I love to cook but hate to clean, so we have a wonderful smelling but sometimes messy house ;-).

I have always loved creating things. One of my earliest memories is sewing a slipper for my baby doll at around 3 years old (I think there was a total of 4 stitches on the whole thing). I soon moved on to using the sewing machine and crochet, then finally learned to knit at age 8. I preferred crochet for many years since it was so much more forgiving and mainly stuck to making plain afghans or simple patterns. Then when I was 20 I came down with mono and was on bed rest for many months. Day time TV quickly lost any allure, and I decided to knit my first sweater. I still remember it – pale yellow cotton with lots of detailing, cables, and long sleeves. It was beautiful but a bit too small and completely impractical to wear.

Years went by. Dissalusioned with that first sweater, I turned to thread crochet and my sewing and created all kinds of intricate things. Slowly, I started noticing how soft and flexible knit items were, and realized I could do better than that old sweater. I began knitting again, and this time was hooked. I flew into making socks and Christmas stockings and began to experiment with my own patterns and designs. Last year my Grandmother passed on all of her knitting tools and yarn as she couldn’t knit any longer due to a stroke. I feel as if I am carrying on a family legacy when I use her needles or the patterns in those old boxes. It’s like coming home.

I love knitting for others, and welcome another chance to do some good while doing something I love.
